What: Painting Life When Life Is Art
When:  June 1 to the 28                Reception:  June 12 from 5 to 7 pm
Where:  The Placitas Library
The Placitas Community Library is pleased to present recent artwork by Elizabeth Bogard from Monday, June 1st through the 28th. The public is invited to attend a reception honoring the artist on Friday, June 12th  from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the Collin Room Gallery of the library.  There is no fee for the exhibit or the reception. The exhibition titled Painting Life When Life Is Art, features abstract figurative works in acrylic, collage, and mixed media on canvas and paper. While most of the pieces feature the human figure, several works are inspired by the Placitas landscape. Of the artist’s work, Oli Robbins wrote in the July 2014 Sandoval Signpost , “Elizabeth references the discipline of phenomenology, in which the components of subjective human experiences are studied. She presents such moments by reducing and simplifying the human figure, thereby emphasizing the elemental.”  Ms. Bogard was born in Arkansas and educated at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, and the University of Texas in Houston, after which she built high profile corporate careers in advertising/marketing and performance development and training. She started painting in 2006, studying collage with Maureen Brouilette, drawing with Peter Ligon and Susanne Kelly-Clark and figurative painting with Mariles Vonk in the Netherlands.   In Texas, she participated on the board of the Irving Arts Association and in group shows at The McKinney Avenue Contemporary (MAC), the Dallas Contemporary Art Center ( DCA ), the Ft. Worth Contemporary Arts Center, and the Irving Arts Association. She is a member of the New Mexico Art League where her collage, The Music Student, qualified for the juried show called “Facing the Muse,” in October 2014 in Albuquerque.

Her artwork can be found in collections of private individuals, corporations and the Amarillo Museum of Art, Amarillo, Texas, Puke Ariki Museum, Plymouth, New Zealand, and at the International Museum of Collage and Assemblage in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She currently shows at Hillside Gallery in Santa Fe. When she is not painting, Elizabeth volunteers at the Placitas Community Library and teaches the Collage Like Picasso! Learning Studio at the Placitas Community Center. She lives in the beautiful Sandia foothills with her husband and Persian cat.

What:  The Social Impact of African American Women's Clubs on the History of New Mexico

The Placitas Community Library is pleased to host Ms. Rita Powdrell, local historian, as she presents the history of the Home Circle Clubs on June 6 at 2:00 p.m. in their Collin Meeting Room.  Historical information, personal anecdotes, lively discussions, and a Q & A time will be used in a panel format. For the past year, Ms. Powdrell and other members of the Albuquerque Home Circle Club have traveled throughout New Mexico sharing the legacy of the 100-year-old organization of African American women who coordinate activities in resistance to inequality and for promotion of intellectual and moral uplift. 

Women of Home Circle Clubs practiced resistance, historically, through civic involvement.  All of their activities were organized in one another’s homes, for home must be a place of safety, sanctuary, and sustenance. The members assume their role as providers of support where resources are inadequate and where access to resources is limited. During times when blatant and overt discrimination was often the rule of behavior toward African Americans in New Mexico and throughout the nation, women of Home Circle Clubs stepped in to instill courage in the face of direct physical attacks, provide educational materials when schools did not offer sufficient academic resources to Black students, and extend financial support when employers refused to pay wages. Their efforts were, indeed, acts of resistance to unequal access to education, housing, health care, and job opportunities. These women still work to improve the lives of the members of their communities. Although the circumstances were different in 1914 when Home Circle Clubs were founded out of necessity, and our society is changing, unequal access was and still is a concern to the women. They are “Lifting their voices and defining themselves in their communities.”   The public is invited and there is no fee for the event.  For more information, please visit www.placitaslibrary.com or call (505) 867-3355. The Placitas Community Library is located at 453 Hwy 165, 5 miles east of I-25 Exit 242.

What:  AN AFTERNOON WITH HILDEGARD OF BINGEN 
When:  Saturday, June 27 @ 2:00 p.m.
Where:  The Placitas Library
The Placitas Community Library will sponsor a lecture presentation by New Mexican composer Jane Ellen on Saturday, June 27th, at 2:00 pm, in the Collin Room at the library. Participants will be invited to journey into the time period known as the Little Renaissance to meet one of its most fascinating residents: 12th Century Visionary  Hildegard of Bingen. Mystic, letter writer, poet, illuminator, healer, herbalist and composer, Hildegard brought new life to old arts in ways which remain mysterious even today. In this special 90 minute talk, accompanied by music, Ms. Ellen will present a broad overview of Hildegard’s life, her visions, and most importantly, her music. The public is invited, and there is no fee for the event.  Preregistration is not necessary. Jane Ellen pursued a Liberal Arts degree with double majors in music and religious studies, graduating from the University of New Mexico (UNM) in 1992, with honors. For the past 20 years she has been a popular speaker to Albuquerque area audiences, and she is a resident instructor at both OASIS Albuquerque and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UNM. A California native, Jane considers herself a citizen of the world and travels at every opportunity.
