Bernalillo is a town in Sandoval County, New Mexico, in the United States.
As of the census of 2000, there were 6,611 people, 2,309 households, and 1,724 families residing in the town.
The elevation if 5,050 feet above sea level.
Route 66 travelers visited this charming western town from the inception of the road in 1926 until 1937, when the route was straightened out through New Mexico. They found a town steeped in history.
When Spanish explorer Coronado headquartered his army here in 1540, the Tewa Indian civilization was centuries old. This explorer's path later became the famous "El Camino Real," the Royal Road from Mexico to its northern territory, ending near Santa Fe. It is now El Camino Real Scenic Cyway. During the U.S. Civil Way, it conveyed cannons up La Bajada Mesa to defend the Union's western territory.
Long an agricultural center along the Rio Grande, there were already acequias, or irrigation ditches, here when Coronado arrived. Bernalillo's reputations as a wine center is believed to have begun in the 1600s. Later the Italian Jesuits made it the source even during Prohibition. Now Bernalillo hosts the annual New Mexico Wine Festival each Labor Day weekend. The festival was named one of the top 100 events in North American by the American Business Association.
