The Sandia and Manzano Mountain ranges lie directly east of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Estimates of the population in this region in 2000 showed approximately 45,000 people. The East Mountains have been an area of growth since that time. People have moved to the numerous small communities of Tijeras, Cedar Crest, Sandia Knolls, Sandia Park, San Antonito, Sedillo, and Edgewood to enjoy the mountains, yet still enjoy the convenience of Albuquerque.
The elevation of 6,500 to 11,000 feet provides for temperatures that are often 10-15 degrees cooler than Albuquerque. The mountains usually get greater levels of precipitation, sometimes in the form of snow. In fact, the East Mountains has its own ski resort, Sandia Peak Ski Area. The Cibola National Forrest offers a wealth of additional recreation. Some examples are hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, camping, picnicing, identified dirt bike trails, sledding, snowshoe races, cross country skiing, star-gazing and much, much more.
Students in the East Mountain communities attend schools from two separate school districts, Albuquerque Public Schools and Moriarty Municipal Schools. Five elementary schools, two middle schools, and East Mountain High School, a charter school, are located through the region.
Perhaps the most attractive part of living in the East Mountains are the mountains themselves. Pinons, junipers, and ponderosa pines abound. The contract of the green pine needles against the bright New Mexican sky is a sight to behold. The night sky speckled with bright stars is endless. Quietude and privacy encompasses the mountain communitees.
